The Pinnacle of Social Media

By Christina

Lately, you hear many conversations about social media and its affect on businesses, interpersonal relationships, and culture and society. We are at the pinnacle of social media and like all things, what goes up, must come down. I've been at the forefront of social media through my internship, having discussions in my Digital Culture class, my marketing job, and in my personal life. What I found was that people are actually reading and listening to what you have to say and are interested!

I've always had a more traditional view of print media and person to person communication. The advent of social media scares me to a certain extent. Are we too reliant on social media? Is this causing a dent on our personal lives? Yes and no. I like to think that people should know when to turn off the computer and just read a book or walk your dog. I would like to believe that once the social media craze is over, people will revert back to simple living. Wow, that actually sounds ludicrous.

Technological determinism says that media affects society and culture. We see this prevalent in today's society with the changing face of public relations and marketing where there are meetings catered to online promotion. Marketers have to create a "how to" brand yourself because it seems like the only thing people will respond to.

What bloggers, tweeters, and facebookers have done is revolutionize our culture into avid media consumers. The question is, whether it is a good or bad thing. You decide.

Vid of the Week

Endearingly funny. Bless us lady drivers. :)

Movie time

by Jing

Just saw two amazing movies this week and felt really compelled to share them with the masses.

First is Public Enemies with Johnny Depp and the ever-versatile Marion Cotillard (the entire time of the movie I kept thinking: Can't believe this is the same actor that played Edith Piaf to a T). I must admit I had little interest in in the life of John Dillenger, the legendary depression-era bank robber whose life the movie's based on in the first place--I initially went to see Johnny Depp's beautiful face (very shallow I know.....). But the movie turned out to be surprisingly suspenseful and emotional. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a hearty weekend film to devour. Plus Depp's performance alone would be worth the ticket.

The other movie I saw and loved was The Hurt Locker. It's hard to sum up the movie as the arc of the story is very subtle and much of its development lies in the details. But roughly it is about a small unit in Iraq that specializes in handling bombs. The movie was so explosively engaging, I was literally at the edge of my seat and biting my nails the entire time. The best part of it was that it wasn't political at all. It simply showed a slice of real life in the war, and attempted at sparking conversations about the addictive nature of it. It's definitely one of those films that stay with you afterwards for a while.

So there's my free endorsement for Universal Pictures & Summit Entertainment :). Hope you'll get to see them sometime and will enjoy them.

(Pls allow me to balance out my recommendation for violent movies with our beautiful Peace charm :))

RIP MJ

It was just last week that I stumbled upon this commercial when I was browsing for interesting clips to put on the blog.

I didn't know that angelic voice was Michael's till I read the comments. I remembered feeling amazed at how long his music had been with us. A whole forty years of his life.

And now a short week later, the amazement inevitably deepens as I watch the world mourn perhaps the biggest star it has seen risen and fallen.

RIP MJ.

Rainy Days

by Jen

So can we talk about this ongoing rain? It's enough to make one think about ark building. Back home in Texas everyone is forced to do their own personal rain dance to even think about the kind or rain NYC is getting right now. There is the occasional exception that will cause small towns to receive national attention.

I remember the Texas "100 years flood" that forced me to camp out at a small theater until the water levels dropped to a reasonable and safe level to drive in. But even after that historic and meteorological event was over, we were back to the same old water restrictions that occur every summer during a drought. And don't tell me that this has nothing to do with global warming because I am not buying it! You have to be in some serious denial to not see the effects of our sometimes environmentally unfriendly activities. I mean its June and it's 69 degrees. I'm not a specialist, but it should have been beach weather 2 weeks ago. It makes you want to do your part in any way you can. Be it, reusing the other side of that piece of printer paper, walking to work, bringing your own sac to the market, or contributing to businesses that love the earth as much as you do.

Tina Tang is so firmly committed to the environment, that every time you buy something beautiful for yourself, you buy something beautiful for the planet. Through our partnership with American Forests, you can plant a tree with every purchase! So go ahead and indulge your love for the earth and get that ReLeaf necklace with the mantra every proud tree hugger should know by heart. Shout it to the world! Peace! Love! Recycle!

Rappers Delight

By: Christina

My favorite video of the day! I saw this yesterday at work and ended up watching it 5 times because it's just so hilarious!

"Thug Story" was the rap Taylor Swift and T-Pain collaborated on at the CMT Awards Tuesday night. Poking fun at her good girl image, T-Swizzy rapped, "I'm so gangsta, you can find me baking cookies at night/You out clubbin' but I just made Caramel Delight."

Reminds me of a Friday night when I'm home in my small hometown, Randolph, Massachusetts. Doesn't it just run chills up your spine? YA...it's that exciting.

Here is Tina's Pearl Gold Fill Hoop Earrings to add to Taylor's gangsta look.
